Newham’s ‘Honouring Our Communities’ Exhibition Celebrates Black Life Across the Borough

A month-long exhibition at East Ham Library is putting African and Caribbean communities at the centre of Newham’s Black History Month celebrations.

Newham is marking Black History Month 2026 with a community exhibition reflecting the experiences, cultures and contributions of people from across the African and Caribbean Diaspora.

Honouring Our Communities, at East Ham Library throughout October, invites residents and visitors to explore a collective representation of Black communities both within Newham and further afield.

The exhibition shares its title with this year’s national Black History Month theme, Honouring Our Communities, which recognises the people and organisations whose everyday work helps strengthen communities across Britain.

Rather than concentrating solely on nationally known figures, the theme encourages people to recognise the contribution of local communities, families, volunteers, artists, educators, campaigners and others whose work can too often go unrecognised.

Newham Council describes the exhibition as an opportunity for residents and visitors to engage, discuss and connect with the works on display.

It forms part of a wider programme of community-led Black History Month events taking place across the borough during October.
