Seeking Freedom: 18th Century Black Lives in Northern England

Saturday 16th May 2026

Seeking Freedom: 18th Century Black Lives in Northern England comes to Kendal Museum for a thought-provoking lunchtime talk exploring overlooked histories and the presence of Black lives in northern England during the 18th century.

Taking place on Saturday 16th May 2026 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm, the event forms part of Kendal Museum’s Lunchtime Talks programme and is led by artist Lela Harris. Through her exhibition Facing the Past: Black Lancastrians, Harris explores hidden narratives of Black individuals in Lancashire, drawing on archival research, artistic practice and personal reflection.

At the heart of the event is a commitment to uncovering stories that have often been absent from traditional historical accounts. Harris examines how these lives were lived, recorded and remembered, challenging established narratives and bringing new perspectives to Britain’s past. Her work highlights themes of identity, belonging and historical visibility.

The talk invites audiences to reconsider history not as something distant, but as something that continues to shape contemporary identity and community. By connecting past and present, the event offers a deeper understanding of how Black histories are embedded within the wider story of Britain.

Set within Kendal Museum, the event provides an intimate and reflective environment suited to discussion and learning. With its focus on research, storytelling and cultural insight, Seeking Freedom offers a meaningful and engaging experience, encouraging audiences to reflect on the depth and complexity of Black British history.
