Get hands on with exploring the role of technology in the arts and join us in questioning and re-thinking its impact on our lives
Help us reimagine the role of the arts in an age of rapid technological change and explore how, through the arts, we can move beyond everyday consumption and technology as a spectacle. Together let’s challenge the mainstream, say the unsaid and address inclusion, integration and the production of technology in our lives, society, work, education – and in the arts.
Get hands on with technology exploration and rapid prototyping, and discover new forms of collaborative digital making experimentation. Throughout the week you will be invited to contribute questions which respond to the positive and negative impacts of technology in our lives. Questions with the largest amount of collaborative interest and activity will be turned into a variety of incubator platforms on the main floor of Tate Exchange.
At each incubator platform you will have the opportunity to engage in digital making, co-creation and open innovation. Help us accelerate ideas and solutions to problems and / or attempt to intervene in the deceleration of a problem.
Before the event
Over the coming months in the lead-up to our Tate Exchange residency, we will be building up a list of questions we can explore together. You are invited to contribute to this process. Do you have any questions about the impact of technology on our lives? Use #artsworkofthefuture to share these in advance or to comment on social media.
Here are some of the questions the Collective are starting to explore:
Is technology killing our imagination?
Are we losing touch with nature?
What is it like, in a post human maker world?
I’m lonely, what can I do?
Will artificial intelligence (AI) make humans obsolete?
Is Virtual Reality (VR) ruining our brains?
Un-conference: Will technology enslave us or save us?
In parallel, but away from the busy main floor, come and join the ‘will technology enslave us or save us?’ un-conference which will run daily throughout the week. Open to anyone, just sign up, propose a topic, ask questions on the day and then discuss with others in a relaxed and informal setting. This is a space to stop, pause and reflect, so we can try and make sense of our digital utopian and dystopian futures.

About the Digital Maker Collective
The Digital Maker Collective are a group of artists, designers, staff and students from the University of the Arts London (UAL) who explore emerging digital technologies in arts, education, society and the creative industries. They are supported by Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges of Arts (CCW), UAL.
