Join Tarana Burke – activist, educator and originator of the phrase Me Too – in conversation with filmmaker Steve McQueen.
Burke is renowned for her tireless activism on behalf of Black women and girls who have survived sexual violence. In 2006, she founded the Me Too movement to support survivors of sexual trauma. A decade later, following the Harvey Weinstein revelations, #MeToo rapidly became a powerful global hashtag, dramatically changing the public discourse around sexual violence. In a new memoir, Unbound, Burke tells her story, including her own experience of abuse which led her to dedicating her life to helping and empowering others.
Oscar and Bafta-winning film director, writer and award-winning visual artist Steve McQueen is known for his broad-ranging work exploring race, identity and social justice. He first met Burke for a Guardian feature in 2018 where they discussed the fallout from the #MeToo revelations, women’s place within the Black Lives Matter movement and much more. Join them as they continue the conversation – three years on – and discuss Burke’s story, her work and the vision that underpins the Me Too Movement. You will also have the opportunity to ask your own questions in this livestreamed event, which will be hosted by Guardian columnist Nesrine Malik.
