Teaching Black History in Culturally Responsive and Community Centered Ways

Thursday 18 November 2021

Every student should learn Black history—and the arts are an incredible tool to teach it.

In this workshop led by Rann Miller, director of Anti-Bias and DEI Initiatives in Southern NJ, you’ll learn new strategies for teaching Black history using the visual and performing arts. From paint to poetry to music, we’ll explore a treasure trove of examples and ideas you can bring back to your classroom.

During this session, you will:

• Boost your understanding of Black history content that is currently taught, how we teach it and why it is not adequate

• Increase your knowledge of what we should be teaching instead

• Gain culturally relevant teaching strategies that uplift community and challenge systemic barriers
