Utopia Theatre presents The Swamp Dwellers, Wole Soyinka’s powerful and rarely performed drama, returning to the UK stage for the first time in more than fifty years. Set in Nigeria’s Niger Delta during the late 1950s, this compelling production explores family, survival and environmental change through one of the Nobel Prize-winning playwright’s earliest and most thought-provoking works.
As relentless rain threatens an already failing harvest, an ageing couple struggle to survive in a small hut raised above the swamp. Long resigned to the disappearance of one of their twin sons, they are shaken when his brother unexpectedly returns from the city carrying difficult truths. The arrival of a mysterious stranger forces long-buried tensions to the surface, creating a moving story of hope, disappointment and resilience.
Directed by Utopia Theatre’s Artistic Director, Dr Mojisola Kareem, this new production reintroduces a play she describes as one of Soyinka’s most quietly powerful works. Although often overshadowed by Death and the King’s Horseman and The Lion and the Jewel, The Swamp Dwellers offers a timely reflection on climate change, migration and the pressures facing communities living on the frontline of environmental crisis.
Performed in the round at Utopia Theatre’s intimate Sheffield venue, the production features an outstanding cast including Jude Akuwudike, Urielle Klein-Mekongo, Theo Ogundipe, Obi Maduegbuna, Joshua Roberts-Mensah and drummer Mr Culture, alongside community performer Omobola Akanbi. With just 50 seats available for each performance, audiences can expect an immersive and unforgettable theatrical experience.
