Impact of slave ownership in modern Britain

Thursday 27 October 6.30pm

In his talk Keith McClelland will describe the Legacies of British Slave-Ownership project,
which has been running at University College London since 2009. Using the online database
(available at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs) he will demonstrate the scope of the project and
discuss the key findings. Slave-ownership in the British Caribbean and elsewhere had
profound repercussions in both the Caribbean and Britain, which have continued long after
the abolition of slavery itself. The repercussions have been economic and political, cultural
and social and, not least, in ideas of ‘race’. The talk will open up these themes for general
discussion.
