RE:IMI Provides Online Forum For Update On UK Music’s Ethnicity/Race-Facing Diversity 10-Point Plan Feb. 16 2022

One year and nine months after the Afriphobic murder of George Floyd and the music industry's post-BlackOutTuesday racial equity affirmations, the leads on the UK Music Diversity Taskforce will be providing an update on what's been happening since the 2020 industry adoption of a 10-Point Plan for achieving EDI objectives.

The Afriphobic murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Africa Day May 25 2020 changed the world in many ways. Within a fortnight of the murder, the music industry initiated the #BlackOutTuesday and #TheShowMustBePaused initiatives to highlight racial injustice, discrimination, Afriphobia, racism, and subsequently announced funds and diversity programmes to address systemic racism, disadvantage, etc.

On Feb. 16 2022 BBM/BMC (BritishBlackMusic.com/Black Music Congress), in association with music industry representative body UK Music, is providing a forum to update the wider music industry stakeholders (check out image below) on what UK Music and its members have been doing to implement parts of the UK Music 10-Point Plan.

In October 2020, as part of the UK Music Diversity Report 2020, UK Music’s members signed up to the 10-Point Plan (see image below), which mapped out objectives towards boosting equity, diversity and inclusion, particularly around Race and Gender, in the music industry.

At the end of 2021 the UK Music Diversity Taskforce undertook the Moving The Dial On Diversity Review to assess the progress made against the UK Music 10-Point Plan and published its results along with case studies.

The RE:IMI (Race Equality: In Music Industry) forum is an opportunity to hear about the updates, challenges and milestones thus far achieved, from UK Music Diversity Taskforce chair Ammo Talwar MBE and deputy chair Paulette Long OBE in conversation with Kwaku (BBM/BMC).

As a RE:IMI forum, the focus will be on race/ethnicity-facing EDI issues, and combating Afriphobia and racism. It’s your forum, so make sure you are there to represent your individual or corporate voice! Let us know what are you doing, give suggestions or ask any questions you may have.

Unpacking The UK Music Diversity Report 2020: 1 Year+ RE:IMI Forum takes place via Zoom on Wednesday Feb. 16 2022, 4.00-5.30pm (UK). It’s a free event. To book: https://bit.ly/UKMBBM.
