The Caribbean and the Second World War

Independent publisher Lawrence Wishart is delighted to announce that the launch of The Caribbean and the Second World War by Colin Douglas will be held on Saturday 8 June at the Black Cultural Archives in Brixton.

This book uncovers the pivotal role of the Caribbean in the war, without which Britain’s bid to repel German invasion would have been in much greater jeopardy, and an Allied victory significantly delayed.

Despite this, racism pervaded the armed forces. Douglas charts the fight against the colour bar, and illustrates how the conditions created by the war both facilitated the Caribbean’s struggle for independence from its colonial rulers and set in motion a new flow of migration to Britain that has shaped its history since.

The event will be include a panel discussion with author Colin Douglas, historian Stephen Bourne and BlackPoppyRose founder Selena Carty, moderated by public historian Kelly Foster.
