Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage is delivering a course over five days that provides an opportunity to learn from archives and heritage industry specialists, as a part of the National Heritage Lottery Fund project, Unearthed: Forgotten Histories.
The course is aimed at young people of African and African Caribbean, Asian and Latinx heritage based in the UK, who are currently under-represented in the heritage sector.
The course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of working with archives, which enhances opportunities for future careers and qualifications. The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) accredited course focuses on the development of key skills associated with archives and the future of the sector.
What the course includes:
- The Young Archivist course is free to attend.
- Training sessions will be hosted at Serendipity in Leicester.
- There will also be an overnight stay in London with the opportunity to visit and hear from speakers at the Stuart Hall Library, Tate Britain and the Museum of London Docklands.
- Sessions cover topics on digital archives, oral history, copyright essentials, leadership, marketing, technology and audiences.
- There will be an opportunity to explore how heritage organisations are representing African and African Caribbean cultures and how these cultures shape British identities.
- CPD accreditation which can support job applications.
Criteria
- Applicants must be available for the duration of the course, Monday 16 October – Friday 20 October 2023.
- Applicants must have an enthusiasm and interest in archives and the heritage sector.
- Applicants must be between 18-30 years old at the point of applying.
- Applicants are actively welcomed to apply who have a disability, and are from under-represented groups in the heritage sector, including applicants with African and African Caribbean, Asian or Latinx heritage.
