The screening at BCU is an ‘exclusive’ before it tours the festival circuit later in the year, including AFRIKANA FILM FESTIVAL (Virginia) LIGHTS DANCE FILM FESTIVAL (Toronto) and AFRIKA FILM FESTIVAL (Cologne).
FIGURE has recently been elected as Film of the Week by the New Rennaisance Film Festival
FIGURE is an experimental film about boys growing up without fathers. It explores how early detachment from a father figure affects emotional growth and engagement with the world. Through a dynamic fusion of physical theatre and hip-hop dance, the film follows two young men as they search for answers both outside and inside themselves.
Lanre is a choreographer and movement director based in London, UK. In 2016, he was chosen to be a choreographer on the inaugural OLD VIC 12; a talent group supported by the Old Vic Theatre comprised of the most exciting emerging artists in the UK. He was the choreographer and movement artist on The British Council film ‘DEAR MR. SHAKESPEARE’, which was selected for the SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL in 2017. As a choreographer, his work has been supported by Arts Council England, The Michael Grandage Company, The Old Vic, Sadler’s Wells and East London Dance. His work has also been performed internationally in Barcelona (MAC festival) and the USA (Breakin’ Convention 2017 tour).
FIGURE stars Nnabiko Ejimofor, an actor and dancer currently studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. His recent credits include the short film, FLOWERS FOR NO ONE. He has performed with Boy Blue Ent and Protocol, his recent credits include, UPFRONT, BREAKOUT and the WILDERNESS FESTIVAL.
FIGURE is produced by Lorna Nickson Brown, a writer, producer and actor from Birmingham. Lorna is currently a Foundry Artist at Birmingham Repertory Theatre, where she is developing a play. She recently produced her first feature film, COLD BLOW LANE, starring Susan Lynch. Lorna is also an actor (Drama Centre London) working in theatre, television and film.
The post-screening discussion will be chaired by Rajinder Dudrah, Professor of Cultural Studies & Creative Industries, Birmingham School of Media.
