London African History Through Representations In The Capital

Monday 18 October 2021

A fun, interactive, family-friendly journey of discovery of African history and representations across London – many hidden in plain sight!

‘London African History Through Representations In The Capital’ video screening + post-screening discussion learning forum. Moderator will keep the discussion flowing and moving forward.

One of the tenets of the African Jubilee Year Declaration called for the promotion of positive imagery, achievements and contributions of Africans at home and abroad, including naming buildings, parks, monuments and streets after notable Africans. This is part of the programme from which Black History Month was launched in London in 1987.

History consultant Kwaku will present his ‘London African History Through Representation In The Capital’ documentary, a video that incredibly spans over two millennia of African representation across London! An attendee of a previous screening descried it as a “decolonising” resource!

It’s a participatory forum, where attendees of this online event are expected to contribute to the discussions by not only asking questions, but also by mentioning any of London’s African-related artefacts and representations that they know of in public spaces.

Which statues or plaques in London representing an African do you know? There will be a special Spirit Of African Jubilee Year 1987-88 clap for any attendee whose contribution is new to Kwaku!
