A display of Caricatures of Jazz musicians and a screening of a Christmas animation exploring masculinity and vulnerability in black men.
Doors will open at 19:00 and guests will have access to an open bar. There will be a display of caricatures of legendary Jazz musicians. These illustrations were made to challenge traditional stereotypes of black masculinity by depicting the melancholy, sentimental and sensitive side of the musicians. The display will be accompanied by Jazz playing in the gallery space to help bring these ideas to life.
At 20:30 the cartoonist, Malachi James, will give a speech in prep for the screening of his animated short, Silent Night. This film focuses on a struggling Young Black Father who is laid off just before Christmas due to a pandemic. He’s determined to buy the expensive toy his daughter wants but ends up surprised at what he finds.
