Celebrate 25 years of groundbreaking dance with Ballet Black at 25, a powerful anniversary production from one of the UK’s most important and influential contemporary ballet companies.
Founded by Cassa Pancho MBE, Ballet Black has spent a quarter of a century transforming the landscape of British ballet—creating opportunities for dancers of Black and Asian descent while bringing new stories and perspectives to the stage.
This landmark anniversary programme features a compelling double bill. At its centre is Ingoma (2019), the Olivier Award-winning work by Mthuthuzeli November, inspired by the 1946 South African miners’ strike. The piece captures themes of resistance, resilience and collective struggle, bringing rarely told histories to life through movement.
Alongside it is a brand-new commission by acclaimed choreographer Hope Boykin, a former Alvin Ailey dancer and two-time Bessie Award winner, making her UK choreographic debut. Her work draws on personal and lived experience, offering a vibrant and forward-looking celebration of Ballet Black’s journey and future.
Known for its bold storytelling, expressive choreography and rich cultural influences, Ballet Black continues to push the boundaries of classical and contemporary dance. This anniversary production reflects both the company’s legacy and its ongoing commitment to innovation, diversity and artistic excellence.
Set in the historic Hackney Empire, the performance offers a powerful and immersive dance experience, combining striking visuals, emotional depth and world-class talent.
