Legendary jazz-funk pioneers The Blackbyrds return to London’s world-famous Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club for two nights celebrating more than five decades of groundbreaking music. Formed in 1973 by acclaimed trumpeter Donald Byrd, the group helped define the sound of jazz-funk, blending sophisticated musicianship with infectious grooves that would influence generations of soul, R&B, hip-hop and dance music. Their appearance at Ronnie Scott’s offers a rare opportunity to experience one of the defining bands of the 1970s performing many of the songs that shaped modern Black music.
Originally assembled from the finest music students at Howard University under Donald Byrd’s guidance, The Blackbyrds quickly became one of Blue Note Records’ biggest commercial successes. Their catalogue includes timeless classics such as Walking in Rhythm, Happy Music, Do It Fluid and the instantly recognisable Rock Creek Park, tracks that crossed jazz, funk and R&B audiences while earning widespread critical acclaim. Their distinctive sound continues to resonate today, with artists including Tupac Shakur, De La Soul, MF DOOM and Nas sampling their recordings, introducing their music to entirely new generations of listeners.
Following the band’s reformation in 1999, original members Keith Killgo and Joe Hall have continued to perform alongside an outstanding group of younger musicians, ensuring The Blackbyrds’ legacy remains vibrant and relevant. The current line-up features Thad Wilson (trumpet), Marshall Keys (saxophone), Charles Wright (guitar), Roberto Villeda (keyboards), Joe Hall (bass), Keith Killgo (drums and vocals), Sean Anthony (percussion), Dominique Toney (vocals) and Paul Spires (vocals), bringing together exceptional musicianship with the unmistakable groove that made the band famous.
Few groups have had such a lasting impact across so many musical genres. Their sophisticated arrangements and irresistible rhythms helped shape the British jazz-funk movement of the late 1970s and 1980s, while their recordings became some of the most sampled tracks in hip-hop history. Today, The Blackbyrds continue to demonstrate why their music remains as fresh and influential as ever, delivering performances that combine tight musicianship, soulful vocals and the energy of a band still performing at the highest level.
