The Reasoning Room

Friday 6th November 2026

Who gets to teach us, whose knowledge is valued and how can Black communities shape education for the next generation?

The Legacy Centre of Excellence launches The Reasoning Room, a new series of carefully curated live conversations created to question, debate and rethink the issues shaping Black culture and community life.

The opening event, Who Gets to Teach Us? Reimagining Saturday School – Black Education, Culture and Community Knowledge, is presented in collaboration with Professor Kehinde Andrews’ Make It Plain podcast and Harambee OBU.

Recorded in front of a live audience, the discussion will explore where and how Black education takes place today. It will consider the role played by supplementary and Saturday schools, Black Studies, books, museums, cultural organisations, arts spaces and knowledge passed between generations within families and communities.

For many Black communities in Britain, Saturday and supplementary schools have provided more than additional academic support. They have created spaces where children and young people can learn about African and Caribbean history, culture and identity—subjects that have often been absent or given limited attention within mainstream education.

The conversation will ask who has the authority to decide what is taught, which histories and forms of knowledge are recognised, and how communities can protect and share their experiences with future generations.

It will also examine what Black community education could look like in the years ahead and how schools, universities, cultural institutions, families and community organisations might work together to create a richer and more representative understanding of knowledge.

The event’s announced contributors include Professor Kehinde Andrews and Busayo Twins.

This is an opportunity to hear different perspectives, take part in an important community conversation and consider how education can better reflect the histories, experiences and knowledge of Black people in Britain.

The event will be recorded as a live edition of the Make It Plain podcast.

Booking is required. Doors normally open 30 minutes before events at the Legacy Centre of Excellence.
