Introduction to the Danford Collection of West African Art and Artefacts

Thursday, 10 November 2016 from 12:45 to 13:30

The Danford Collection of West African Art and Artefacts celebrates the extensive cultural traditions and artistic expression of countries in West Africa. The collection ranges from domestic and ceremonial objects to contemporary African art, with particular strength in Yoruba and Hausa objects. Alongside objects made to be used ceremonially, the collection also includes valuable commissions from individual carvers. Whilst the cultural and geographic origins of the Danford Collection are wide and disparate, common themes across the collection emerge. This tour introduces some of these themes, such as masquerade and music, as well as highlighting key objects that demonstrate both the breadth and the strengths of the collection.

The tour will start at 12.45, and the meeting point is the ‘Old Joe’ Clock Tower. Please arrive at 12.35 to ensure that the tour can start promptly.

This tour is part of a wider programme of campus tours Curators and Connections: behind the scenes tours of the Research and Cultural Collections, for further details please see the eventbrite pages.
