In 1992, a former member of Take 6 was asked to arrange and produce a project that would weld black music genres to that marvelous perennial classic by George F Handel. The successful result was the Grammy Award winning Handel’s Messiah: A Soulful Celebration. The celebrated arranger became a popular Hollywood film and television composer and arranger, Mervyn Warren. Mervyn has arranged for both films (The Preacher’s Wife) and superstars including Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Richard Smallwood and many others. In 1993, a remake of a Contemporary Christian Music project from pre-1990, originally known as the Young Messiah, was born. The creators of The New Young Messiahinvited Mervyn to arrange several more songs on that work too.
This year represents the 26thand 25thAnniversaryof these respective projects. To celebrate this in Europe, Dougitoons Productions, together with Darron Wint of By Faith Productions, has produced a concert called The Young Soulful Messiah, which draws together, through musical cohesion and a light narrative (which links the Hebrew experience to the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade experience through a selection of popular pieces from both albums. To achieve our aim of musical excellence, Take 6 and Mervyn Warren will be taking part as they did on the original Soulful Celebration project over twenty-six years ago. Miss Kim Burrell will also be part of the Headliner leads. Beyond this, Mervyn is also adding a new arrangement to this canon and we will be hosting the world premiere of it.
