Paint a Tote Bag – Celebrating Black History Month invites participants to explore African-inspired design and creativity through a relaxed hands-on workshop at UWE Bristol.
Taking place at the university’s Frenchay Campus, the drop-in session gives participants the opportunity to create their own personalised tote bag using designs inspired by traditional African prints, patterns, symbols and block-printing techniques.
Art, textiles and pattern have long played an important role across African cultures, communicating ideas about identity, family, community, history and belonging.
The workshop provides an accessible opportunity to engage with some of those creative traditions while producing something practical and individual to take home.
Participants will be able to explore different symbols and visual ideas before choosing designs that connect with their own interests or personal journey.
Tote bags, fabric paints and the equipment needed to take part will all be provided by the organisers, allowing visitors to simply arrive and get creative.
Events such as this offer a different way to engage with Black History Month, demonstrating that history and heritage can be explored not only through lectures and exhibitions but also through art, design and shared creative activity.
The informal setting also provides an opportunity for students and members of the university community to meet others, exchange ideas and take part in a relaxing evening activity.
The event is free to attend and booking is not required, although materials are limited and participants are advised to arrive early.
