Summer Of Soul

Friday 22th April

Questlove took home the Oscar and BAFTA for Best Documentary for this joyful celebration of African American music and culture.

Summer of Soul is a revolutionary music documentary about one of the biggest concerts in music history, described as ‘Black Woodstock’, that was written out of the Summer of ’69.

For the first time, the footage from that glorious summer in Harlem is being shown alongside recollections from artists and festival goers. This documentary highlights the intersection of the Harlem Cultural Festival with revolution, in every facet; musical, political, ideological and cultural.

After a devastating decade of loss (JFK, Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X), Summer of Soul depicts an emotional release and raises black voices, in prayer, prose, song and joyful noise. This is an event as relevant now as it should have been in the years since 1969.
