Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason – House of Music: Raising the Kanneh-Masons (In Person)

Tuesday 1 June 2021

Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason is a remarkable woman: growing up as a mixed-race child in Britain in the 1970s, she is a former lecturer at Birmingham University and has seven children – all of them phenomenally talented musicians.

“It’s not just a book about music. It’s also a book about overcoming racial barriers. It’s a book about courage.”

Sheku was the first black musician to win Young Musician of the Year and performed at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, two of his siblings are former BBC Young Musician finalists and the eldest, Isata, has released her first album and performed at the Proms.

They don’t come from the rarefied environment of elite music schools, but from a state comprehensive in Nottingham.

In House of Music, Kadiatu recounts the love and determination of herself and her husband that raised a musical family in a Britain divided by class and race.

This event takes place in person at Derby Theatre. An online livestream is also available…
