Icons of Railton Road Walking Tour

Sunday 26 October

Join Lambeth Tour Guide Nikky Catto on an inspiring journey down Railton Road, meeting the icons who transformed Brixton, Britain and the world’s narratives through one remarkable street.

Walk a mile in the footsteps of extraordinary figures who, over the last 125 years, turned this residential road into a front line of change, creativity, and community.

From Black Power to piano, politics to Pan-Africanism, soundsystems to TV shows, poetry and protest, Railton Road has been home to people and projects that reshaped not just the local area, but far beyond. These pioneers brought talents and perspectives from around the world, adding a distinct Brixton edge that continues to inspire.

The guided walk will introduce key people, places and initiatives. Some may be familiar, others entirely new discoveries — and some may even connect to first-hand experiences participants bring along. This isn’t just a tour but a chance to engage with history that is alive, resonant and deeply rooted in community.

As part of Black History Month, the walk is designed to contribute to a wider community project exploring the unique history of Railton Road. Participants are warmly invited to share memories, reflections and knowledge that help enrich and preserve this collective story.

The tour begins outside 198 Arts and Contemporary Learning, at the corner of Hurst Street, with an 11am start. It lasts around 90 minutes and will conclude by Brixton House Theatre. Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
