Phoenix, in partnership with Dare to Diva, continues its Black Resistance and Power of the Supernatural season with Bill Gunn’s groundbreaking 1973 cult classic Ganja & Hess.

Defying both Blaxploitation and conventional horror tropes, Gunn crafts a bold, poetic film about sex, religion, and African American identity. Duane Jones (Night of the Living Dead) stars as Hess Green, an anthropologist stabbed with an ancient ceremonial dagger by his unstable assistant. The act grants him immortality but condemns him to a life of unquenchable bloodlust.

Visually daring and thematically profound, Ganja & Hess remains one of the most original and influential films in American independent cinema.
