Dance and Dementia: From Despair to Desire

Monday 10 January 2022

Irrespective of age, health or social status all of us at every stage of life must have some access to Art.

Art is one magical ingredient that enriches our lives. Irrespective of age, health or social status all of us at every stage of life must have some access to Art. With this philosophy in mind, as a dance artist, Bisakha started to search for ways to share the joy of dance-related activities; in particular, with people who are often excluded from taking part in such uplifting experiences either as a participant or as a member of an audience.

One such group is the community of people living with dementia and their care givers. Through a wide variety of workshop programmes and presentations of dementia-friendly performances, it became evident that artistic interventions changed people’s moods, both relaxing and energising their minds.

Art offers an opportunity to dream. It gives permission to enter a world of imagination, where one can feel being in control. While the medical approach in dementia care looks at pharmacological interventions to relieve anxiety and fear, artistic engagements offer magical moments of joy and help to uplift the collective spirit.

This event will combine a talk and live performance by Bisakha.
