We are kicking off Black History Month with the screening of Handsworth Songs, a British documentary film directed by John Akomfrah and produced by the former Black Audio Film Collective in 1986. It was filmed during the 1985 riots that erupted in London and Birmingham’s Handsworth district as an active response to police brutality.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Ashitey Akomfrah, Producer & Production Manager at Smoking Dogs Films, the archival home to the film.
