Join Loki Music for a special Black History Month performance exploring the presence and influence of Black composers and themes in Georgian theatre and music.
Performed by Bloomsbury Baroque using period instruments, this unique concert brings together works by Ignatius Sancho and Joseph Bologne—both Black composers and influential figures of their time—alongside music inspired by non-European narratives.
The programme also includes incidental suites by James Paisible (Oroonoko) and Henry Purcell (The Indian Queen), as well as songs from Oroonoko, highlighting how stories beyond Europe were interpreted in 18th-century music and theatre.
The performance features a distinguished ensemble including soprano Philippa Hyde, alongside flute, violin, cello and harpsichord, creating an authentic and immersive Baroque sound.
Designed to be accessible and engaging, the musicians will introduce both the music and their instruments throughout the evening, making it an ideal event for both newcomers and experienced listeners.
Set within the historic surroundings of Garrick’s Temple to Shakespeare, this intimate concert offers a rare opportunity to explore overlooked narratives in classical music history as part of Black History Month 2026.
