In Conversation with David Lammy MP

Thursday 9th March

In this ‘In Conversation’ event, we are delighted to be joined by the Shadow Foreign Secretary, David Lammy MP!

In the latest in our popular ‘In Conversation’ series – which has previously featured high-profile politicians such as Ken Clarke and Diane Abbott and the broadcaster, Michael Cockerell – we are welcoming David Lammy MP to the Mile End Institute. David will be reflecting on his early life, becoming the first black Briton to graduate from Harvard Law School, succeeding Bernie Grant as the MP for Tottenham, and serving in Tony Blair and Gordon Brown’s governments.

We will also ask David about the Labour Party’s programme for government and his vision for the UK’s foreign policy. Following his recent Chatham House speech, David will take stock of the ongoing war in Ukraine and outline the importance of pragmatism over ideology in international relations. Given David’s extensive backbench campaigning on discrimination in the criminal justice system, we will also seek his opinion on the Casey Report and the Metropolitan Police’s approach to policing black Londoners, nearly 25 years after Sir William Macpherson’s public inquiry declared the Met to be ‘institutionally racist’.

This event will be held in the Peston Lecture Theatre in the Graduate Centre at Queen Mary University of London’s Mile End campus, which is number 18 on this map of QMUL’s campus. It is open to all and there will be opportunities for you to put your questions to one of the UK’s most senior and highly-regarded politicians.
