Slave-owners of Wandsworth: legacies of British slave-ownership in Wandsworth

Monday 5th October

Dr Draper is a founder and director of Legacies of British Slave-ownership, an umbrella for two projects based at UCL tracing the impact of slave-ownership on the formation of modern Britain. In his talk he will look at local connections with Britain’s colonial slave system. For nearly 200 years, the meticulous records that detail these forgotten stories have lain in the archives-until now.

The records reveal that the slave-owners were not just the super-rich. They were ordinary members of the middle classes who exploited slave-labour in distant lands. At the core of the project is a database containing the identity of all slaveowners in the British Caribbean at the time slavery ended. The information gathered about the activities, affiliations and legacies of all British slave-owners is now available online in the Encyclopedia of British Slave-Owners: www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/search/ Free – bookings essential: 020 7223 2334
