RUDEBOY: The Story of Trojan Records – Screening and Costume Designer Q&A

Thursday 9th March

Join Subcultures Interest Group UAL for this screening and Q&A with RUDEBOY Costume Designer, Natalie Willis.

Following a symposium in 2019 titled Subcultures and mediated representations, the Subcultures Interest Group (SIG) was formed by three PhD researchers. Through regular meetings, SIG have held a series of discussions and events that seek to continue the identification, definition, transmission and dissemination of subcultural styles, attitudes and effects. SIG aims to bring undergraduates, postgraduates and the wider UAL community together to interrogate this subject.

  • What are subcultures?
  • What are their functions and meaning both historically and contemporarily?
  • How do subcultural properties survive and thrive?

We continuously pose these questions to gain greater knowledge and understanding of socio-historical networks of resistance, grandeur and taste.

In 2022, SIG produced a subcultural newspaper that covered an array of global subcultural practices. We are currently planning a symposium and another follow-up publication in 2023.

Film Synopsis

RUDEBOY: The Story of Trojan Records is a film about the origins and impact of Trojan Records and Jamaican music on modern Britain. It explores Jamaican and British Youth culture told through the prism of one the most iconic record labels in history, TROJAN RECORDS.

Told by a cast of legendary artists including Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Toots Hibbert, Ken Boothe, Neville Staple, Marcia Griffiths, Dave Barker, Dandy Livingstone, Lloyd Coxsone, Pauline Black, Derrick Morgan and more.
