Tony Kofi’s Portrait of Cannonball

Sat 09 November 19

Tony Kofi first came to prominence as a member of the Jazz Warriors. His international reputation was enhanced when he became a member of the iconic World Saxophone Quartet. His present group celebrates the music of the jazz giant Julian “Cannonball” Adderley from his first session as a leader in 1955 through work with Miles Davis to the Soul Jazz of the 1960’s. “An absolute blast, one of the most exciting gigs of the year!” London Jazz News.

Tony Kofi – Alto Sax
Andy Davies – Trumpet
Alex Webb – Piano
Andy Cleyndert – Bass
Alfonso Vitale – Drums
Deelee Dube – Vocals

An absolute blast, one of the most exciting gigs of the year … a brilliant all-round package.  [Deelee] Dube was not overshadowed by anyone in this illustrious company … it was a marvellous surprise and a real lift to be in on the discovery of a brilliant new voice surrounded by jazz riches of the highest kind.’ – London Jazz News

‘Tony Kofi’s Portrait of Cannonball started the festival, setting the bar high for subsequent acts. Tearing into the Adderley canon … Kofi’s spirited approach was supported by a tight rhythm section – Alex Webb (piano), Andy Cleyndert (bass) and Alfonso Vitale (drums) – and he was joined by Andy Davies, whose trumpet solos were sharp and clear. Vocalist Deelee Dube was added for several numbers from the Nancy Wilson/Adderley 1961 collaboration.’ – Jazzwise

‘Kicking off with the big boys on Friday, Tony Kofi’s Portrait of Cannonball, with the absurdly undervalued trumpet of Andy Davies … with the rhythm section of Alex Webb, Andy Cleyndert and Alfonso Vitale really kicking in … a couple of songs by Deelee Dube, sounding like a very young Sarah Vaughan, softened the edge of Kofi’s hard blowing set just a little.’  – London Jazz News
