Brighton’s acclaimed spoken-word series STATUS FLO presents a special Black History Month edition featuring poet Maureen Onwunali, hosted by AFLO. the poet.
The evening brings together powerful contemporary poetry, performance and storytelling, creating a space for Black voices, lived experience and creative expression.
Hosted by Brighton-based spoken-word artist AFLO. the poet, STATUS FLO has established itself as a platform for award-winning performers alongside emerging voices from the city and beyond. The series celebrates poetry that is socially engaged, emotionally honest and unafraid to challenge the status quo.
For this Black History Month special, AFLO. is joined by Maureen Onwunali, a poet and writer whose work explores identity, migration, belonging, womanhood and the complexities of contemporary Black experience.
Through rhythm, language and storytelling, the evening offers audiences an opportunity to hear poetry that reflects both personal experience and wider conversations around race, heritage, community and British identity.
STATUS FLO is designed to bring poetry closer to audiences, presenting spoken word as a living and immediate art form rather than something confined to the printed page.
The series has been praised for creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, thought-provoking and emotionally powerful, with performances that move between humour, reflection, politics and deeply personal storytelling.
Taking place during Black History Month 2026, this special edition places Black creative voices at the centre of the programme and highlights the continuing importance of spoken word as a space for cultural expression, resistance and community.
STATUS FLO: Black History Month takes place at Brighton Dome on Monday 5th October 2026 at 8:00pm.
