Black British Civil Rights at GCSE level

Illustrated talk about the pioneering GCSE text book based on our Notting Hill Black history walk with commentary, extra notes and videos.

Black History Walks has worked with Pearson education to convert our Notting Hill walk into a GCSE exam text book. The book covers individuals and topics never covered before at this level, including:

  • Baron Baker and Black self defence groups
  • Notting Hill ‘riots’ of 1958
  • Black economic self empowerment
  • Black British Civil rights
  • Claudia Jones and the Black media
  • The Mangrove 9
  • Housing racism and West Indian community solutions
  • The White Australia policy
  • Caribbean food, blues/shebeens and music
  • Police brutality before Black Lives Matter
  • African/Caribbean World War 2 connections

This illustrated talk will take you through the book, pointing out the exciting new areas for study, the resources and additional references as well as intriguing histories outside the scope of GCSE.
