Discussing ‘Pass the Mic’ with Talat Yaqoob

Monday 13 December 2021

Looking back at a year of Scotland’s pioneering media diversity project.

Pass the Mic is a ground-breaking project to increase the visibility of women of colour in Scottish media. It worked with a range of print and broadcast journalism partners to carve out a platform for 30 expert women writers and challenge exclusionary cultures.

What were the highs and lows? What lessons were learned? What barriers remain? And, crucially, what more can we all be doing to achieve true equality in our media.

As the first year draws to a close, its founder, Talat Yaqoob, will discuss its many successes and the challenges she faced with Women in Journalism Scotland Co-Chair and BBC journalist Catriona MacPhee.

We will also hear about the monitoring research on the visibility of women of colours’ expertise in Scottish media, undertaken in partnership with Professor Karen Boyle and Melody House at the University of Strathclyde.

Essential listening for decision-makers and those tasked with improving diversity in our media.
