The music and extraordinary stagecraft of Michael Jackson are celebrated in Solihull as tribute performer Navi brings The King of Pop to The Core Theatre.
Backed by a live band and dancers, Navi recreates music from across Jackson’s career, from the early years of The Jackson 5 through to the solo recordings that made Michael Jackson one of the biggest artists in popular music history.
The programme includes songs such as Billie Jean, Beat It, Black or White, Man in the Mirror and other favourites associated with Jackson’s extensive catalogue.
Navi has an unusual personal connection to the artist whose work he performs. According to the venue, Michael Jackson personally invited Navi to perform at one of his birthday celebrations in Los Angeles and later employed him as an official body double and decoy during UK visits.
That connection has helped make Navi one of the best-known Michael Jackson tribute performers, with his shows seeking to recreate not simply the music but the choreography and visual spectacle associated with Jackson’s live performances.
Michael Jackson’s impact on popular culture extended far beyond record sales. As a Black American artist achieving unprecedented global visibility, his music videos, choreography, fashion and production helped reshape expectations of what a pop performer could achieve.
His career also built upon a much longer African American musical tradition encompassing Motown, soul, funk, R&B and dance music.
Although The King of Pop is not specifically marketed as a Black History Month event, its October date makes it suitable for a wider Black music heritage programme celebrating artists whose work has had a lasting influence on global culture.
Suitable for the whole family, the production offers longtime Michael Jackson fans as well as younger audiences an opportunity to revisit some of the songs and performances associated with an extraordinary career.
