Inspired by the life of Nina Simone, Black Is the Color of My Voice is a powerful and intimate theatrical experience that blends storytelling with live music to explore the journey of an artist shaped by both talent and resistance.
Written and performed by Apphia Campbell, the acclaimed one-woman show follows a successful singer and civil rights activist as she reflects on her life after the sudden death of her father. Through memory and music, the performance traces her path from a young piano prodigy to an internationally recognised artist whose voice became central to the Civil Rights Movement.
Featuring many of Nina Simone’s most iconic songs performed live, the production captures both the emotional depth of her music and the political urgency of her message. It offers a moving exploration of identity, race and artistic expression, revealing how personal experience and social struggle became inseparable within her work.
Having toured internationally to standing ovations and sell-out audiences across the UK and beyond, the show has received widespread acclaim for its emotional power and stripped-back staging, creating a direct and intimate connection between performer and audience.
The Garrick Theatre, located in London’s West End, is one of the capital’s historic venues, known for hosting a wide range of acclaimed productions in the heart of the city.
