To Publish Is to Decide What Is Remembered

Saturday 3rd October 2026

A publisher’s list is a form of memory: it determines what gets read and, often without saying so, what does not. This thought-provoking panel explores memory, racism and diaspora through the work of three distinctive publishing projects.

Chaired by Dr Jesús Sanjurjo-Ramos, the panel brings together Quinny Martínez Hernández of Plataforma Cero, María del Pilar Kaladeen of Wasafiri Magazine and Aissata M’ballo Diao of Jaŋde Editorial.

The conversation begins with a practical question: what does it take for a story to be published? The speakers will consider silent archives, differences in language, funding, distribution and the political decisions surrounding who a text addresses.

Wasafiri 126: Impossible Returns – The Spain Issue, edited by Marta Fernández Campa and María del Pilar Kaladeen, brings together work by racialised Spanish writers and artists examining national memory, colonial history, nationality and identity from London and in English.

Based in Barcelona, Plataforma Cero is an anti-racist and transfeminist editorial, cultural and academic project. It supports migrant and racialised authors entering publishing and works across books, illustration, photography and performance. Its collective publications include Mujeres del Maíz and Migrantas en diáspora. It also organises FILMIG, an annual gathering of migrant writers, artists and communities.

Jaŋde Editorial is a publishing cooperative founded between Barcelona, Vic and Mataró that places racialised and migrant voices at the centre of its work. Its name comes from Pulaar, the language of the Fulani people, in which “jaŋde” means both reading and teaching.

Dr Sanjurjo-Ramos will also present the historical comic Castigo a la osadía: condena y olvido de Candelario Villafaña, created with illustrator Alfonso Zapico and historian Yaimara Izaguirre. It tells the story of a revolutionary sentenced to 200 lashes and exile in colonial Cuba in 1837.

There will be time for questions from the audience.

This talk forms part of the 2026 London Spanish Book & Zine Fair programme.
