National Dance Company Wales presents Blue | Glas, a powerful contemporary dance double bill exploring grief, human connection, freedom and the courage required to move towards a new beginning.
The programme brings together Ordinary Courage by choreographer Theo Clinkard and Untamed, a new work by Olivier Award-nominated choreographer and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Alesandra Seutin.
Originally created in 2012 and newly remade with National Dance Company Wales, Ordinary Courage is a moving reflection on grief, loss and the quiet strength found through human connection. Inspired by Clinkard’s experience following the death of his mother, the work considers the ways movement and touch can offer support when words are no longer enough.
Set to a score incorporating music by Scarlatti and Bach, the piece uses intimate physical language to explore vulnerability, memory and the gradual process of living through loss.
In contrast, Untamed is an athletic and emotionally charged new work inspired by the human urge to run. The choreography considers running as both an act of escape and a movement towards transformation, asking whether we are leaving something behind or moving towards a different future.
Featuring bold costumes, lighting inspired by stadium athletics and a driving soundtrack combining traditional Welsh instruments with ancestral voices, Untamed celebrates resilience, rebirth and the courage required to become who we are meant to be.
Together, the two works present contrasting but connected perspectives on the human experience. One pauses to consider grief and the strength of connection; the other gathers momentum, looking towards release, renewal and possibility.
A post-show discussion will follow the performance on Tuesday 6th October, giving audiences an opportunity to learn more about the works and the creative ideas behind them.
Taking place during Black History Month, Blue | Glas also provides an opportunity to experience the work of Alesandra Seutin, one of contemporary dance’s leading Black British choreographers, alongside the exceptional dancers of National Dance Company Wales.
