In conversation with … Nazir Afzal OBE

Monday 18 October 2021

As part of our schedule events to mark Black History Month, former Chief Crown Prosecutor, Nazir Afzal OBE will be joining us to discuss key themes in his forthcoming book ‘The Race to the Top: Structural Racism and How to Fight it’.

This session will form part of a series of expert-led guest session for the BA (Hons.) International Business Management students in the Department of Economics, Policy and International Business, but we are delighted to live stream the session so that a wider audience can hear about the findings of his most recent research.

Nazir Afzal’s OBE research will offer an ambitious set of recommendations for root-and-branch systemic change to bring about a generational transformation in Britain’s professions and the upper echelons of our leadership.

Nazir Afzal OBE, was Chief Crown Prosecutor for NW England and formerly Director in London. Most recently, he was Chief Executive of the country’s Police & Crime Commissioners. During his 24 year career, he has prosecuted the most high profile cases in the country & advised on many others and led nationally on several legal topics including Violence against Women & Girls, child sexual abuse, and honour based violence.

He had responsibility for more than 100,000 prosecutions each year. His prosecutions of the so called Rochdale grooming gang and hundreds of others were ground breaking and drove the work that has changed the landscape of child protection.
