On Sunday 22nd June, from 11.00 to 13.00, there will be a free guided walking tour exploring the powerful and often overlooked Black history of Westbourne and Paddington. This unique event offers the chance to delve into the legacy of the Windrush generation and the lasting impact they, along with other individuals and activists, have had on shaping the character and community of this historic part of London.
The tour will take participants on a journey through time, tracing stories that go far beyond the headlines. While many are familiar with the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948, fewer know the deeply personal experiences of those who settled in Westbourne and Paddington. Through this walk, their lives—along with those of their descendants—are brought to life, weaving together narratives of resilience, activism, and everyday contributions that helped build the social and cultural fabric of the area.
Attendees will discover a range of fascinating sites, from blue plaques commemorating significant Black figures, to lesser-known spots rich in community significance. These include local landmarks tied to civil rights activism, places of worship, and cultural centres that played key roles in nurturing a sense of belonging and identity for generations of Black Britons.
The walk also highlights the dynamic presence of Black communities throughout the years, not only in terms of their cultural influence but also in their determination to fight injustice and demand change. From grassroots organisers to quiet revolutionaries, these stories have often remained untold—but this tour offers an opportunity to walk in their footsteps and appreciate their legacy in a very real and immediate way.
The meeting point is Grand Junction, Rowington Close, W2 5TF. The route is expected to take approximately two hours at a moderate walking pace, making it accessible to most people. The tour will also conclude at Grand Junction, offering participants a full circle experience, both geographically and historically.
This event is not just a walk—it is a chance to connect with the past in a meaningful and engaging way. Whether you have personal ties to the Windrush generation or are simply interested in local history, this tour promises insight, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the diverse threads that shape London’s story.
