Karen Bell, Sub Officer, London Fire Brigade 2009 – present

“I am thankful that I am able to support people when they make that emergency call.”

Karen Bell joined the London Fire Brigade 12 years ago. Starting as a Control Officer receiving 999 calls, she has spent the last 11 years as a Firefighter. Karen’s career has been full of memorable experiences. “Whether it be the first time I saved someone’s life or, comforting a frightened child following an emergency call or, whether it be my five minutes of fame on CBeebies last year, talking to children about my job. All are equally important, rewarding and fulfilling.”

Karen says “Being a black female firefighter comes with many challenges, but most importantly it comes with the same pleasures, sense of achievement and extreme immeasurable pride.”
