Black History Month – Artist talk with Chris Bramble

Thursday 5th October

Join GSA Graduate & Glasgow Museums’ collection artist Chris Bramble for an artist talk on his GSA and ceramics Studio practice

Join The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) Graduate and Glasgow Museums’ collection artist Chris Bramble for an artist talk on his GSA and ceramics Studio practice from 10 years residence in Glasgow from the 1970’s & 80’s and now London where he has been since the late 80’s. Chris was instrumental in the setting up of ceramic Studio spaces in Dalhousie Street in Glasgow and exhibited widely in Glasgow and Scotland while he was here. His work from 1986 in Glasgow Museums’ collection is currently on display in Domestic Bliss at GOoMA.

Specialising in ceramics, Chris Bramble graduated from The Glasgow School of Art where he developed an interest in European sculptors like Rodin as well as African craftsmanship.

The contrast of African heritage and European upbringing lead to Chris’s warm, contemporary style, combining African forms and culture with modern techniques.

In 1985, Chris moved to Zimbabwe where he was influenced by methods of colloquial stone sculpture; meeting local artists and attending workshops, he learned processes of carving serpentines and verdites and translated these new forms and techniques to his ceramic work.

Returning to London and exhibiting sculptures, Chris set up his own studio in 1988 where he continues to run workshops in traditional ceramic craftsmanship and develop work alongside his daughter, Freya.
