renowned historian S I (Steve) Martin will speak on Lt. George Bemand, a mixed-race officer who was killed in action in WW1.
Dulwich College-educated Jamaican George K Bemand was probably the first non-white officer to be accepted into the British Army in World War 1. He lived with his brother and mother in Denmark Hill and his life shines an interesting light on Black people in WW1 and South East London’s small Black community 1900-1919
