Ballaké Sissoko & Vincent Segal

Thursday 25 May 2017, 7.30pm

Ballaké Sissoko is one of Mali’s greatest exponents of the kora, joining forces in an unlikely pairing with Vincent Segal, a French cellist best-known for his work in trip-hop and resulting in an elegant and soulful music.

Now, these two sonic voyagers have returned with Musique de Nuit – an album even more spellbinding than its predecessor.

Perhaps the most magical thing about the new album is that after years of touring, and performing together on hundreds of stages around the world, the album has the feeling of eavesdropping on a late-night jam session – it was recorded in two sessions in the Malian capital of Bamako – one at night on Ballaké’s rooftop, and the other during the day in the famed Bogolan studio.

‘It’s the work of two musicians from very different backgrounds who seem to understand each other almost intuitively.’ (**** The Guardian)

Support: Koki Nakano
Opening for Ballaké and Vincent is young Japanese pianist/composer Koki Nakano who releases his first album Lift with French cellist Vincent Segal on the No Format label on 3 March 2017. Piano and cello combine in a selection of beautiful pieces, where Nakano draws on his classical background whilst weaving in other influences, using repetitive and rhythmic elements of jazz and creating layers of sound inspired by pop and electronic music.
