Refugee Week ft. Niwel Tsumbu, Didier Kisala and Steve Tromans

Friday 23 June

Niwel Tsumbu – Since arriving in Ireland in 2004 from the Congo, Niwel Tsumbu has developed an enviable reputation as a masterfully elegant and fluent guitarist, vocalist, musician, collaborator and composer.

Didier Kisala – is a singer/songwriter and founder member of Birmingham-based Congolese band The Redeemed, bringing beautiful and soulful vocal performances to his acoustic sets and collaborations with many artists.

Niwel and Didier have a long standing friendship going back to their youth in Congo and their performances present a combination of styles and experiences, reflecting their shared culture, stories and memories.

Dr Steve Tromans is a professional musician who has been active as composer, pianist and bandleader since the 1990s, working predominantly in the field of improvising music. He has given over 6,000 performances at a variety of events ranging from international festivals to the intimacy of club spaces, and composed over 100 original works. In recent years he has been undertaking research in music (his own solo piano work) and philosophy (pertinent aspects of the work of Gilles Deleuze) at the University of Surrey, investigating a notion of musical-philosophical expression and developing a novel conception of “rhythmicity” as a complex movement of interdisciplinary and multimodal enquiry. He is now a Doctor of Philosophy.

These three musicians have collaborated before, all having worked with Surge Orchestra.
