Black History Month Launch: Black Classics in Concert

Thursday 1st October 2026

Launching Black History Month 2026, Black Classics in Concert is an evening celebrating the musical legacies and enduring contributions of composers from the African and African Caribbean diaspora.

Curated by Alison Buchanan, Artistic Director of Pegasus Opera Company, the concert brings together an impressive line-up of singers performing opera, song and spirituals. The programme honours historic and contemporary Black composers whose work has shaped classical music and expanded its repertoire.

The evening also reflects a broader understanding of “classics” — recognising music across genres that has stood the test of time and continues to resonate across generations.

Held at Leicester Cathedral, the concert forms part of the official Black History Month 2026 launch programme and follows the afternoon’s Black Classics Symposium at the Serendipity Institute for Black Arts and Heritage.
