Global Film Screenings at Strand Arts Centre are regular cultural films teamed up with an introduction, Q&A or discussion. It is a platform for championing films from different cultures in a relaxed and informative way. JoinHer Network and Golden Thread Gallery have been invited to widen discussion and to share experiences. This creates wider discussion around the film and makes connections or comparisons to Northern Ireland.

Sir Steven McQueen is a British filmmaker and video artist. He is known for his award-winning film 12 Years a Slave, an adaptation of Solomon Northup’s 1853 slave narrative memoir. He also directed and co-wrote Hunger (2008), a historical drama about the 1981 Irish hunger strikes in Northern Ireland.

In 2020 McQueen released Small Axe, a collection of five films documenting stories of hard-won victories in the face of racism and love letters to black resilience and triumph in London’s West Indian community 1960-1980s. The title references a proverb – “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe” – that was popularised by Bob Marley in his 1973 song “Small Axe”.
